An unhealthy diet made up of mostly of junk foods can lead to short- and long-term health problems. If you frequent fast food restaurants, vending machines, and convenience stores, chances are your diet will be high in saturated fat, sugar, sodium, and won’t have enough vitamins, minerals, and fiber. A typical diet of sweets, fats, and salt can lead to the development of metabolic syndrome, a range of health problems that increases your risk for chronic diseases.
Healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat protein help keep your weight down. They can provide the nutrition you need without the unwanted fat and sugar that can contribute to weight gain. Fat and sugar can also cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies. According to the Surgeon General’s Office, being overweight can raise your risk for heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancers.
Foods high in sodium such as canned foods, potato chips, and fast food can raise your blood pressure. The American Heart Association advises that any food that contains 20 percent of your daily sodium requirement is excessive. Having high blood pressure will predispose you to other health problems like stroke and heart attack. Substitute your need for snacks by choosing fruits and vegetables instead.
A diet rich in saturated fat and cholesterol can cause plaque buildup in your arteries. This condition is common among those who love fast-food burgers and fried fatty foods. According to the American Heart Association, long term intake of foods high in fat and cholesterol can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots. To minimize your consumption of unhealthy fat and cholesterol, opt for fish, beans, and lean or white meat.
Blood sugar elevation
Foods such as cookies, cakes, pies, and other treats typically use a lot of white flour and sugar. These ingredients can cause your blood sugar to shoot up and drop rapidly. Having a diet high in sugar may lead to type 2 diabetes because your body will develop resistance to insulin. Avoid foods high in refined sugar and eat more fiber instead.
