Five Easy Ways To Detox After The Holidays

Jan 2nd, 2013

Easy Ways To DetoxThe holidays are over. We can finally say goodbye to eating all those calorie-rich, fatty foods. Right now, you’re probably feeling heavier, more tired, and bloated than usual. If you want to get back to your old self, you don’t have to go on an extreme diet or workout right away. Follow these easy ways to detox and take the steps to get back in shape the healthy way.

1. Don’t beat yourself up. Feeling guilty about your holiday eating habits will only make you more miserable. Dwelling on your mistakes can get you stuck in a rut, making it more difficult for you to move on to your health goals. Remember that nobody’s perfect and indulging in some holiday treats is not entirely a bad thing.

You’ve probably gained a few pounds over the holidays, so wait for a week before you step on a scale. Knowing just how much weight you’ve put on might get you down a bit.

2. Start exercising gradually. You probably want to burn off as much calories as you can right away. Doing too much, too soon can cause soreness and injuries that can set you back for days. Perform 20 to 30 minutes of gentle exercises like walking, stair climbing, and cycling. Don’t worry about intensity at this point, your goal is to raise your heart rate just a little bit each time.

3. Get rid of holiday treats. If you still have some unhealthy leftover food, give them away before they can do more damage to your body. You can keep some of your favorites but eat them some other time when you’ve gotten rid of toxins in your body.

Give your body some time to reset to normal. Cut back on sugar, salt, and refined carbohydrates to avoid feeling bloated.

4. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals which can help your body get rid of toxins you consumed over the holidays. Have around eight to ten servings of varying fruits and vegetables each day.

Eat whole grain food like wheat and oatmeal for breakfast to keep your digestive system moving and get rid of junk faster.

5. Drink lots of water. Staying properly hydrated throughout the day helps your body flush out toxins and eliminate waste. Furthermore, water is your number one weapon against holiday hangover since it replaces lost fluids from drinking too much alcohol. The International Sports Medicine Institute recommends daily intake of half an ounce of water for every pound of body weight for inactive adults; and two-thirds ounce per pound for those who are active.
